Chromascapes - Chemical memories of place
‘Chromascapes’ are plant dye patterns, made from local plant materials prepared at different temperatures & pH, repeatedly dip-dyed onto laboratory filter papers. Each one is ephemeral; many of the dyes are light sensitive, and while the work can be fixed using resin or varnish, I often allow them to decay naturally, keeping only the digital record. For some dyes, using a different temperature or pH changes the colour, allowing different shades to be obtained from the same plant. For example cold rose petal dye is purple, a hot preparation is acid pink, and application of alkali results in blue.
